The mummified and tattooed head of an ancient Maori warrior is to be returned to New Zealand after spending decades in a French museum..

The handover of the "toi moko" follows years of campaigning by New Zealand officials and Maori elders.

It has been held at the Museum of Rouen in northern France since 1875.

French senator Catherine Morin-Desailly said it was right to return the head to New Zealand while Michelle Hippolite, co-Director of Te Papa National Museum of New Zealand, said heads were cut off as a reminder of tribal battles.

In a ceremony where music and singing mingled with calls to the spirit of ancestors, New Zealand recovered 20 mummified Maori heads Friday that had been held in French museums for nearly two centuries. The tattooed heads were handed over by French officials from Paris's Quai Branly Museum after a four-year political struggle. The Maori heads were once warriors who tattooed their faces with elaborate geometric designs to show their rank, and were an object of fascination for European explorers who collected and traded them from the 18th century onwards.
